What is handwritten direct mail?
Handwritten direct mail is physical mail — notes, cards, letters, and hand-addressed envelopes — written in real handwriting rather than printed type, then sent to a list of recipients. At its best, each piece carries a complete message personalized for that recipient, pairing the personal feel of a handwritten note with the reach of a marketing campaign.
How it differs from printed direct mail
Standard direct mail is set in a typeface — every piece is visibly machine-printed, and recipients recognize it as bulk mail in seconds. Handwritten direct mail instead reproduces a genuine hand, with the slant, pressure, spacing, and small inconsistencies that make writing look individually penned.
That difference changes behavior at the mailbox: a piece that reads as personally written gets opened, read, and remembered far more often than one that reads as mass-produced.
Why handwriting lifts response
Direct mail already outperforms a crowded inbox: it is roughly 37 times more likely to get a response than email (ANA/DMA Response Rate Report, 2025), and 58% of consumers say they feel overwhelmed by digital messages (Lob & Comperemedia, 2025).
Handwriting raises the bar further. Handwritten addressing increased the likelihood of a response by about 25% compared with computer-printed labels (Edwards et al., Cochrane, 2023), a reproduced handwritten note more than doubled customer spending while a printed-font note did nothing (Kim, Choi & Kim, Journal of Interactive Marketing, 2022), and recipients are consistently more moved by a handwritten note than senders expect (Kumar & Epley, Psychological Science, 2018).
What you can send
Handwritten direct mail spans the same formats as ordinary mail, just written by hand:
- Notecards and greeting-style cards
- Postcards
- Full letters
- Hand-addressed custom envelopes
- Add-ons like a handwritten signature, logo, or QR code
- Personalized merge fields (name, history, campaign details) on every piece
- A complete message personalized for each recipient — not just a merged name
How Handfelt does it at scale
Handfelt's writing is based on real handwriting — trained from a single short sample of your own hand, or chosen from a curated set — never a font. You upload a list and write one message (or let Handfelt generate a complete message for each recipient), and it personalizes, writes, prints, hand-addresses, and mails every piece, then tracks delivery and response per campaign.
Pricing is per piece, and a plan lowers that per-piece rate; postage is billed separately at standard USPS rates. Because it is software-driven, it scales from a single note to tens of thousands without a room full of pen-holding robots.
